Urban Edge for James Terry Court
Care home gets updated and modernised with Leaderflush Shapland urban edge doors

Originally a family home, James Terry Court in South Croydon was converted into a care home in 1980. It has retained its homely atmosphere and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and has recently undergone a new build of an East Wing to provide the most modern care home facilities; it exceeds all the latest government guidelines and legislation for size, accessibility and facilities.

The new facilities include up to 48 bed-sitting rooms with large communal areas providing 20 residential rooms, 20 rooms for nursing care and 8 rooms for dementia care. The wing has full en-suite wet rooms and ceiling hoists in large spacious bedrooms. In April 2012, the second phase of the project will be started; the West Wing will provide a further 28 bedrooms and the remodelling and refurbishing of the home’s main building will provide independent living flats.

Once complete, 464 Urban Edge doorsets will have been supplied to the home. The Urban Edge range is the perfect choice for high volume residential developments like James Terry Court offering exceptional style and flexibility from the standard range to the freedom of a more bespoke range.

The Urban Edge range of doorsets, has been designed to meet and exceed the needs of sectors such as care homes, city apartments, key worker living, hotels, student accommodation and modular build are unique.

The doorsets supplied to James Terry Court are finished fully painted and also some in American White Oak Veneer, all with 30 minutes fire resistance. Veneered doorsets incorporate Hygienilac within the wood lacquer as standard on all doorsets. Hygienilac is Leaderflush Shapland’s revolutionary anti-microbial additive which kills most harmful bacteria including C.diff, MRSA, Salmonella, Ecoli and Listeria.

Doorsets were constructed using EnduraCor, Leaderflush Shapland’s engineered performance doorset core, which Independent testing shows to be 100 times more durable than multi-layered chipboard cores. EnduraCor allows for doors with increased width and height to be specified, ideal for care home environments which require easy access and specialised facilities.

Urban Edge has been the choice for prestigious contemporary developments such as Adelaide Wharf on the Regent’s Canal at Shoreditch, Frobisher Crescent, part of London’s Barbican Estate and the Elephant & Castle Printworks apartments. These high quality doorsets combine style with functionality and affordability and, with a wide choice of finishes and glazing panel options.

Education Doorsets from the industry leader

26 Oct

Doors and doorsets in schools and colleges have many unique requirements which can appear daunting for specifiers unless they have theappropriate guidance.

With around a third of our total business coming from the education sector, Leaderflush Shapland has a wealth of relevant knowledge and experience and can provide cost effective, rationalised doorset solutions that consider the latest legislation and guidance whilst satisfying a wide range of technical performance requirements such as fire resistance, smoke control, sound reduction, security and infection control.

The education sector’s complex needs have been the catalyst for many of our product innovations. For example, as a direct result of our involvement in the building of the co-located Newfield and Talbot schools in Sheffield, Leaderflush Shapland developed ‘Envision’ which allows any image or design to be back-printed on a hardwearing 2mm translucent door facing. Envision can be specified for use on any doorset within the Designer, Plasform and Extended Performance ranges, transforming an everyday feature into a unique focal point.

These ranges can also help to raise the standards of hygiene within schools by controlling the spread of infections through a highly effective anti-microbial additive – Hygienilac – which kills harmful species of bacteria such as e.coli and salmonella and is incorporated as standard within the lacquer on all Leaderflush Shapland veneered doorsets.

Hygienilac has also been incorporated throughout the complete 2mm thickness of Hygieniform, a high impact PVC whose durability and robust qualities make it suitable for ‘severe duty’ applications such as schools and even if the surface is scratched, Hygieniform retains its antimicrobial properties.

ROSPA reports that 30,000 children trap and seriously injure their fingers in doors each year and more than 1500 of these children will need surgery. Sentinel is Leaderflush Shapland’s effective and unobtrusive solution for preventing hands and fingers from getting into the hinge area of the door without compromising performance.

Further innovations include EnduraCor, Leaderflush Shapland’s engineered performance doorset core whose durability and strength is especially suited to withstanding harsh environments. Independent testing showed EnduraCor to be 100 times more durable than multi-layered chipboard cores. This highly cost-effective solution could significantly reduce ‘whole life’ repair and maintenance costs and, as EnduraCor is manufactured using sustainable materials, it can also help specifiers achieve an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating when ordered as FSC.

‘Specifying CE Marked timber doorsets – a guide for building professionals’ document

4 Oct

At present, CE marking in the UK is voluntary and expectation is by 2013, CE marking of all relevant construction products will become compulsory in all EU member states and will include doorsets and timber fire doors.

With the benefits of CE marked doorsets clearly apparent they are fully expected to become the default requirement for major projects such as schools, hospitals and other public buildings and that CE marked doorsets will be the preferred specification for general applications as they offer many advantages compared with door assemblies created on site from separately sourced components. These door assemblies cannot be CE marked and, even with a door assembly comprising components previously forming part of a CE marked doorset, they may not be compatible, therefore it cannot be assumed that this is in any way equivalent to obtaining a CE marked doorset from a single source.

Leaderflush Shapland, the UK’s leading performance doorset manufacturer, sees CE marking as a positive step and is working in conjunction with the Door and Hardware Federation (DHF) to promote the benefits to architects, specifiers, designers, contractors and end-users through a specifically tailored document titled ‘Specifying CE marked timber doorsets – a guide for building professionals’, which can be downloaded from the Leaderflush Shapland website. The document outlines what standards CE marked timber doorsets will need to be tested to and the benefits to the specifier of choosing CE marked timber doorsets.

Ray Anning, Leaderflush Shapland’s Head of Technical and NPD explained why the company is giving its full support to the new standard, “CE marking will mean that one manufacturer alone is responsible and accountable for the performance and certification of the entire doorset and ironmongery assembly and that compatibility of all the components is assured.

“It also considerably improves on-site logistics leading to faster and more accurate installation and reducing potential health and safety issues with site work and assembly.”

Leaderflush Shapland has been a long-time advocate of the doorset as a fully finished, engineered element comprising frame, pre-hung door leaf (with any vision panels) and essential ironmongery, all matched and pre-assembled in the factory and delivered to site as a package for reassembly and simple installation. Their doorsets are designed as complete, engineered units to meet specific performance requirements and manufactured to exacting standards from established components under factory conditions.
